What happened
Como’s 4–1 Champions League win over RB Leipzig has naturally pulled attention toward the scale of the project. Marca framed the club as an example of knowing how to spend, but the scoreline gives us a more useful way to test that claim. Expensive squads are common. A squad in which a creator, a runner, a centre-forward and a substitute midfielder all solve different parts of the same match is much rarer.
The official match report records four different Como scorers: Martin Baturina, Tasos Douvikas, Assane Diao and substitute Máximo Perrone. That spread matters. Como did not win because one star repeatedly rescued disconnected possession. The goals came from different roles arriving at the right moment, with Nico Paz involved in the moves for the third and fourth and Baturina connecting the first half.
Luis Milla offers the other side of the recruitment story. UEFA lists him among the players who made their first Champions League appearance in the opening round. His value on Thursday was not novelty or resale potential; it was the calm to hold the centre while younger attackers moved around him. Why the pieces fit
Baturina’s opener and Douvikas’s goal are a good pair to study. On the first, the striker’s movement helped open the inside route for Baturina. The players brought different qualities—physical reference, decision-making between the lines and acceleration—but the sequence worked because the next pass was already supported.
Then the bench made the same idea survive the substitutions. Perrone entered after 65 minutes and scored in the 90th, with Paz carrying the break forward. Depth is sometimes described as having a second expensive name for every position. A better definition is being able to change personnel without losing the team’s routes through the pitch.
The Como view
There is no reason to pretend money is irrelevant. Como’s rise has been powered by ownership willing to invest, and any honest account of the project has to say so. But a transfer fee does not teach a full-back when to narrow, a midfielder when to hold, or a forward when to leave the ball for the next runner. Those details come from recruitment suited to an idea and coaching that makes the idea repeatable.

The club’s gesture before the match also belongs in this discussion. Mirwan Suwarso and directors gave up seats for long-time supporters born in 1950 or earlier. It does not settle every debate about modern ownership, but it shows an understanding that a fast-growing project still borrows its meaning from people who followed Como when there was little glamour to buy.
One big European night proves potential, not permanence. The next test is whether the same connections survive rotation, a deeper opponent and the ordinary league afternoons when the emotional energy is lower. That is where a sporting plan becomes more than a beautiful launch.

Thursday offered a clean answer to the question raised by the spending. Como have collected talent, but Fàbregas is beginning to turn that talent into complementary jobs: one player fixes the defender, another receives, another runs beyond, and the bench keeps the pattern alive.
